Project:
Adaptive reuse and major renovation of an existing abandoned K-mart Building to a new 80,000 square foot YMCA facility with abundant natural light filtering into the building and a new 13,957 square foot outdoor pool area.
Challenge:
Creation of a new contemporary multi-use community facility from an abandoned “big box” retail store.
Solution:
BBi created a design for the new 80,000 square foot YMCA facility, natatorium and open air pool space. The building was designed to be energy efficient with the option of being certified as a “Green” building.
The programmed functions included in this building are:
- Lobby with snack bar
- Computer labs
- Natatorium with 2 meter lap pool
- Outdoor recreation pool and kiddie pool
- Multi Purpose Rooms – flex spaces / classrooms / studios / meeting rooms
- Administrative areas – office / conference rooms / open office areas
- Gymnasium with three basketball courts (adaptable for tennis, volleyball, badminton)
- Indoor jogging track around the basketball courts
- Court storage / equipment storage / restrooms associated with the gymnasium
- Wellness Center – weight training / cardio training / aerobics / yoga /dance and spinning studios
- Men’s, Women’s, Boys, and Girl’s locker rooms with saunas, whirlpools and steam rooms
- Youth areas – recreation areas grouped by ages
- Special Needs / Family locker rooms
- Childcare areas with outdoor play
